Interact Worldwide Wear Red Instead

On December 1st 2005, World AIDS Day, we invited schools to help raise money for Interact Worldwide's partner organisations in Africa and Asia which provide prevention, treatment and care services for people affected HIV/AIDS. By donating a pound students could Wear Red Instead to show their support for those with HIV/AIDS and to fight stigma and discrimination.

Nearly 40 million people are infected with HIV worldwide and over 12 million children have already been orphaned by the epidemic. HIV/AIDS is the most serious public health crisis the world has ever faced. In the most affected regions the HIV/AIDS epidemic is undermining health and education systems and reversing decades of progress in development.

World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for teachers to add a global dimension to learning about health issues. Learning about HIV/AIDS can be used to explore the relationships between ill health, poverty and discrimination at home and overseas and directly supports the teaching of geography, modern studies, biology, citizenship and PSHE. Activities which allow room for young people to discuss and reflect on the factors which increase vulnerability to HIV, including peer pressure and gender, also provide opportunity for them to develop the skills needed to make healthy personal choices.

We fundamentally believe that by educating young people about global health issues, we empower them with the skills and confidence they need to improve their own and the world's future.
